Let’s just say Work first, Hobbies second…
We all strive to achieve the gold standard of ‘happiness’ which in most places superficially means to appear ‘happy’ from the outside! This requires (life) achievements, trophies and possessions to show(-off) which requires noteworthy status and an accordingly remuneration which is more feasible with a higher degree preferably from a reputable institute which requires the best grades in school which requires disciplined self-management and loads of schoolwork as early as possible in life to be prepared for all things coming. Cause after all, the biggest fear is you might be a ‘nobody’ or at least people might think such thing of you! This leads to the consequence that make the things you like most (a.k.a. your hobbies) secondary since they are least likely to contribute to this ideal picture and all left-brain activities of primary concern (a.k.a. the necessary skills to secure your career).
This is, in a nutshell, is pretty much the ‘carousel’ the largest part of the developed world is put into – a one-size-fits-all-development-plan. A plan which crams toddlers into a left-brain-biased-education-machine configured to transform them into analytical, well-organized, numerical, controlling adults ready for an ‘economic-driven-world’. As a consequence, predominantly right-brained people don’t stand a chance, fall between two stools or have to work at least twice as hard to fit in while neglecting and ignoring their passion and talents.
Moreover, it is a system that squeezes and disqualifies right brainers on an early age to be lower-educated or in other words losers of society. Which is ironic following Daniel Pink reasoning that it is the right brain skills which sets individuals, organizations and groups apart from straightforward, industrialized and computerized (zero-one) thinking. The exact group which our current education system filters out. A system which by the way finds it’s roots and fundament in the glorious industrial age more than 50 years ago!! Not sure whether I should laugh or cry about the fact we still prepare our children to be perfect employees in factories as clearly summarized in a 4 minute YouTube video “6 problems of our education system”. But more about education here
